Creative Exploration of Medway
(In Partnership with Medway River Lit/Wordsmithery)
In January 2025, participants joined Michi Masumi for an inspiring workshop that celebrated Medway’s local environment through photography and poetry.
The session began at Nucleus Arts, Chatham, where Michi introduced Phoetry—a unique art form that combines photography and poetry to create powerful visual stories.
Phoetry encourages us to look deeper into our surroundings, capture meaningful images, and express emotions or narratives through words. It’s a creative tool for mindfulness, storytelling, and cultural reflection.
Michi shared practical tips for taking better photos using a phone camera, helping participants see everyday spaces in new ways.
The group then took a mindful walk along Chatham High Street to Riverside Gardens, snapping photos and gathering poetic inspiration along the way.
After a short comfort break, everyone returned to Nucleus Arts for a warm drink and a creative session, transforming their photos into poetry.
Why Phoetry Matters
Phoetry is more than art—it’s a way to connect with your environment, explore identity, and express ideas visually and verbally. It’s useful for:
-
Mindfulness & Wellbeing: Slowing down and noticing details.
-
Creative Expression: Combining two art forms for richer storytelling.
-
Community Engagement: Sharing perspectives through images and words.
